The Town of Middlebury maintains two Animal Control Officers.  The Officers are on call 24 hours a day/7 days a week.  The Officers work with the Middlebury Police Department for assistance and enforcement along with the Town Clerk's Office for Dog Licensing.

LEASH ORDINANCE 

Control of Dogs 

In addition to any requirements and restrictions set forth in the laws of the State of Connecticut, the Town of Middlebury hereby requires that all dogs must be leashed when on town property, or private property other than the premises of the owner. The leash may be no longer than 7 feet long. 

Violations and Penalties 

Any person who violates any provision of this article shall be deemed guilty of an infraction and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $90 nor more than $250. 

 Procedures 

The procedures for infractions, as set forth in Connecticut General Statutes Section 51-164n, shall be applicable to infractions hereunder. 

 Appeal Process 

There will be an appeal process if a resident feels that they received a fine for a wrong reason.  The appeal will be submitted on the form (which can be obtained from the Police Department) and subsequently heard by the Police Commission. 

DOG LICENSING

Dogs are licensed each year during the month of June and licenses can be obtained via the Town Clerk's Office (Town Hall), mail-in registration. or on-line registration.  More information on Dog Licening and to steps to license your dog can be found by clicking on this link:  Dog Licensing | Middlebury, CT (middlebury-ct.org)

All new and renewal licenses require a copy of your dog's current rabies certificate from a veterinarian.  Licenses for a new dog that has not been licensed in the prior year also require a copy of the spay/neutered certificate, if applicable.
