History

In 1990, the idea of creating a walkway along an old trolley bed was spearheaded by First Selectman Edward B. St. John, and it soon became a reality. This former trolley route from the early 1900's ran through Middlebury from the Waterbury town line to Lake Quassapaug. Once it was completed, a committee of volunteers organized to oversee and plan for future development under the guidance of the Park and Recreation Commission. Thus, the Greeway Committee became an official town committee interested in maintaining this beautiful linear park. Other town groups and residents have been very involved in maintaining and donating to the Greenway. Memorial benches located throughout the Greenway have been donated in memory of residents. Flower beds are planted and maintained with the help of the Beautification Committee. As you travel along the length, take note of the historical markers depicting Middlebury's rich history. In the many years since its creation, the 4.5 mile paved Greenway has been widely used by both residents and visitors.
