Pay Range $29.86 - $30.61
 
Job Purpose
Supervised by the Director of Public Works, works in the construction and maintenance of Streets, Drainage Systems, Buildings, Grounds and Transfer Station operations. Responsible for the safe operation and proper maintenance of the equipment assigned and does other related work as required. 

 
Job Environment
The majority of this work is performed outdoors during all seasons, in all types of weather conditions, storm conditions and temperature extremes. During the winter months DPW Personnel are required to be available and to respond for snow/ice removal 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. During emergencies this prospective candidate will be required to work extended periods of time, around the clock with very little rest.  Exposures to dirt, fuel, oils, grease, asphalt, tack oil, concrete, paint, loud noises, smoke, fumes, and other unfavorable conditions can be expected daily. 

 

Job Requirements

Considerable technical knowledge of materials, methods and techniques commonly used in Public Works activities; thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the road construction and maintenance equipment and related machinery; thorough knowledge of snow removal , sewer, water, building, grounds and waste collection operations; performs repairs as required under the proper supervision.
 

In order to be considered for this position you must indicate on your application and resume that as of the closing date you have the following experience:

  1. At least two (2) years of experience in the performance of public works activities including at least one (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of road construction and maintenance equipment and related machinery.
  2. The ability to operate an Ariel Lift bucket truck and experience with tree trimming and tree removal is a plus but not required.
  3. Must possess a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operations License CDL Type Class A with a clean driving history.
  4. Must have common knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations governing truck and heavy equipment operation.
  5. Must be available for 24/7 emergency calls from November to April.
  6. Physical strength and agility to sufficiently do strenuous laboring tasks under varying and at times adverse weather conditions.
  7. Must know how to properly use and maintain chain saws, cutoff saws, other power tools and hand tools.  
  8. Must be in good physical condition.
  9. Ability to estimate and requisition materials, equipment and other supplies.
  10. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  11. Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in verbal and written form. 
  12. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  13. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public.

Drug Testing

Candidates shall be required to submit to a drug test as part of the pre-employment medical examination.  An individual appointed to the position will be required to participate in a random drug and alcohol-testing program as required by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Any offer of employment is conditional based upon successful completion of a physical examination and an authorized Department of Transportation (DOT) regulated drug and alcohol record check.
