The municipal water system on the eastern side of the Town was initiated in 1988 by the developer who constructed the Crossroads East commercial property on Rt. 63.
Under a developers agreement with the Town the water main was extended from an existing water main on Country Club Rd in Waterbury to approximately 1/4 mile north on Rt. 63. Subsequent extensions brought the main to Woodside Ave. The Timex Corporation then extended the water system to the Kelly Road and Three Mile Hill area and constructed a pumping station.Through grants from the State the Town coordinated the construction of a water storage tank and expanded the system in phases to a point where in 2005 the system is comprised of over 10 miles of water mains serving over 200 customers with water and fire protection. Future plans include the installation of 3.5 miles of new water mains. The water system is operated and maintained by the Connecticut Water Company under a long term agreement with the Town. The water serving the east section of town is supplied by the Naugatuck Division of the Connecticut Water Company.
The municipal water system on the western side of town is comprised of approximately 4 miles of water mains. Approximately 2.5 miles of the system is owned and operated by the Heritage Water Company and the remaining 1.5 miles of the system was constructed by the Town and operated and maintained by the Connecticut Water Company under a long term agreement with the Town. The water serving the western section of town is supplied by The Heritage Water Company.
When the planned construction of the last phase of the water system is completed in 2006 the system will serve an area of over 700 homes in the most populated areas of town.
Residents who wish to connect to the system are required to pay $300.25 hookup fee to the Town tax collector who will issue a permit which is then submitted to the Connecticut Water Company who will advise the owner of the proper procedure for the hook up. Internal piping within the home must be physically disconnected from the well before a connection can be made to the municipal system per state regulations. For information regarding the cost of water and more detailed hook up procedures contact Connecticut Water Company Naugatuck Division. The Middlebury Water Commission is the Town agency charged with oversight of the operation and expansion of the Municipal water system within Middlebury.
