The Highway Division of the Middlebury Public Works department strives to provide the residents of the Town with the best roads possible. The division is composed of ten full time employees one of which works at the transfer station two days a week. Combined the ten employees provide the Town in excess of 200 years of construction experience. The division also has at its disposal the majority of the equipment necessary to maintain the sixty-five miles of road in the Town’s inventory without having to rely on outside contractors.
The highway division is responsible for all aspects of road maintenance. The department removes the snow in the winter and sweeps the residual sand in the spring. We maintain the roadside to provide a safe sight line including the removal of dead and diseased trees. The department fills potholes and crack seals or paves roads as required. Over the last few years many of the older roads in town have under gone complete reconstruction. In some cases the reconstruction was do to the age of the road or because of the installation of new water mains or a combination of the two.
Although the highway division does not have flashy red lights or load sirens we are also an emergency response department like the police and fire departments. The division is on call 24/7 for whatever acute road emergency arises including downed trees, collapsed roads, and snow removal.
The members of the highway division will always try to help the residents through a construction site, but what we ask of the residents is patients and understanding for that construction site is our office.
