October 12th Committee Meeting

 Minutes of the Middlebury Bicentennial Committee
October 12, 2005

Those present were Bob Desmarais Sr., Kelly Ecsedy, George Frantzis, Jane Gallagher, Ron Gustufson, JoAnn LoRusso, Terry McAuliffe, Lou Orsini, Alicia Ostar, Ray Pietrorazio, Betty Proulx, Robert Rafford, Jill Regan-Baltrush, Ed St. John and Ron Vitarelli.

 

1. Call to order by Terry McAuliffe @ 7:04 pm., followed by a “round the table” introduction.

 2. The minutes of the Sept.meeting were read by Terry, with motion to accept by Bob Desmarais, seconded by Ray Pietrorazio, unanimously voted.

 3. First Selectman Ed St.John advised the committee to put together a budget for the bi-centennial celebration.

 4. Old Business-

-- Ron Vitarelli suggested we must select activities, get people involved.

-- George Frantzis spoke of Quassy Amusement Park interest in participation, in whatever way they can be of help.

-- Bob Desmarais suggested the timeline be sensitive to both large and small events, with proper spacing and coordination.

-- Betty Proulx said she and others are working on a fund-raiser already: a cocktail party to be held @ the Truck Museum on Rt. 188, with Silent Auction. Committee is formed.

-- Ron Vitarelli suggested head committee meet again to prepare a timeline laid out on large roll paper to provide a full “at a glance” look at the two-year timeline.

-- Lee Ostar requests any artifacts/momemtos left by this celebration to be given to the Historical Society

5. Reports

-- Ron Vitarelli reported that he and Terry McAuliffe have been working with the Region 15 leadership with regard to student involvement, and that the response has been excellent, very responsive and productive. Some activites discussed were musical performances, writings, and sending representatives to our committee meetings. Also there was talk of inclusion of the bi-centennial in the school curriculum. Terry was impressed at how CLEAN the schools were kept. Ron capped that two types of things will take place during this celebration: timely events and lasting memories.

-- Terry reported on the town website and the bi-centennial inclusion. The website will be more and more beneficial as our planning progresses.

-- Publicity- Terry plans press releases to Voices and Republican-American on future committee meetings and plans.

-- Fund-Raising-Ralph Barra suggested a long-range plan be developed for grant assistance and requests.

-- Research- Bob Rafford mentioned two firms interested in doing a book, Donning Co. and Arcadia Co. He also reported on a speech to be given at the Rochambeau Monument off Breakneck Hill Rd., by the W3R Rochambeau Committee, and a lecture/tour of the monument on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005. There will also be a historical survey of the oldest Middlebury homes, involving their architecture, styles, uniqueness, etc.

-- Major Events- Bob Desmarais reported this is still in the formation process.

-- Jane Gallagher advised on upcoming library anniversary (founded 1794). She has some “ancient” records that we must see. She also mentioned “Constant Outreach” software program she recommends as a system of mass- communication, e-mail.

 6. New Business

-- Terry McAuliffe- mentioned logo/slogan contests as one of the first timeline items, in conjunction with schools. There should be prizes, notoriety of some sort.

-- Jill Regan- Suggested a “Time Capsule” .

8. Motion to adjourn by Terry McAuliffe, seconded by Ray Pietrorazio, unanimously voted.
