Minutes of the Middlebury Bicentennial Committee
November 10, 2005
Those present were Ralph Barra, Bob Desmarais Sr., Kelly Ecsedy, Suzanne
Kenishea, JoAnn LoRusso, Terry McAuliffe, Arlene McAuliffe, Crosby Middlemass, Lou Orsini, Alicia Ostar, Ray Pietrorazio,
David Pope, Betty Proulx, Robert Rafford, Jill Regan-Baltrush, Ray Sullivan, Ron Vitarelli,
and Harold West.
1. Meeting called to order by Terry McAuliffe 7:00 pm.
2. Minutes of Oct. 6th meeting were reviewed and unanimously accepted.
3. Ron Vitarelli described the “timeline”, how it was developed, with
discussion on:
-- Funding
-- W3R dovetailing on Rochambeau march, re-enactments
-- Kelly and Jill suggested possible combining of sledding, ice skating,
sleigh ride
-- Dave Pope explained planned re-enactments to take place within Middlebury,
(civil war soldiers, etc.)
-- Possible Episcopal Church gingerbread theme to reflect Bicentennial.
-- Lee Ostar volunteered to head up a sub-committee on “Historic Homes”.
-- Ralph Barra suggested consideration of a “Quassy Regatta”.
-- Bob Desmarais will contact Middlebury seniors with regard to a
“Bi-centennial Bingo” activity. He will contact Joanne Cappelletti, Director.
-- A “Time Capsule” was suggested for September, ’06 or ‘07
-- A “Tree Planting” was suggested for June of ’06 or ‘07
-- A “Trivia Competition” was suggested for kids.
4. Ralph Barra reported funding has not developed because of absence of a
budget.
5. Ray P to meet with Middlebury Board of Selectmen to request official
Bi-centennial status (presently ad hoc) and discuss separate financial
account with seed money. Also provide Selectmen with update thus far.
6. Ray P to check with Westover School about possible use of facility for a
“Bi-centennial Ball”.
7. Ray Sullivan talked about old gravesites @ Breakneck Hill & Tyler
Crossing. Ron Vitarelli moved to support a formal observance and marking of
this gravesite as a Bi-centennial activity, which was seconded by Terry
McAuliffe and unanimously voted.
8. Logo/Slogan subcommittee members Crosby Middlemass, Suzanne Kinneshea, Ray
Sullivan, and Arlene McAuliffe planned a series of work sessions at the
Library to prepare a proposal for the next meeting.
9. Terry requested an interim meeting at his house of the head committee,
Nov. 16th, 6:30 pm.
10. Next meeting will be Dec. 8th, 7:00 pm at Shepardson Community Center,
Room TBD.
11. No other new business, the meeting was adjourned, motioned by Ray P.,
seconded by Terry McAuliffe, and unanimously voted.
