May 5th Committee Meeting Notes

Minutes of the Middlebury Bicentennial Committee
May 5, 2005

Those present were Ralph Barra, Bob Desmarais Sr., Jane Gallagher, Janice Kulpa, Hal Lynch, Terry McAuliffe, Mike McCormack, Ray Pietrorazio, Robert Rafford, Ed St. John, Ron Vitarelli and Harold West.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by vice chair Janice Kulpa.

Minutes of the April 7, 2005 meeting were passed out.

Terry McAuliffe reviewed official website activity. Terry met with Claudia Tata and Chris O’Donnell to discuss plans for the Bicentennial website. Claudia met with Rudy Mazurosky of Voices. A column will be established to handle any publicity for the committee.

Due to the resignation of chair Doug Veillette, the committee voted to have three co-chairs: Ray Pietrorazio, Ron Vitarelli and Janice Kulpa. This will allow for a more efficient and effective division of duties and responsibilities.

A letter from the Middlebury Lion’s Club was read requesting a memorial plaque to be placed at the location of one of Middlebury’s earliest burial sites on Breakneck Hill Road.

The suggestion was put forth that a Bicentennial booth be set up at Middlebury Day at Quassy on June 23, 2005. Janice agreed to man the booth and create a poster and some initial information. (to be decided upon at next meeting).

Discussion followed regarding holding a “series of contests” over the next two years aimed at all age groups. Ron, Ray and Terry said it was very important to involve children in all aspects of the Bicentennial celebration. The plan is to start with a “Come up with a logo Contest” during the summer, aiming to choose a winner by the Fall to be used throughout the Bicentennial celebration. Other contests could include coming up with most interesting fact about Middlebury, the most interesting person to live in Middlebury and the most interesting place in Middlebury, quilt project.

Mike McCormack agreed to head up the Finance Sub-Committee. Ralph Barra agreed to look into securing grants for the event. Sen. DeLuca and Rep. Tony D'Amelio were mentioned as possible contacts. Jan agreed to follow up on this also.

Each committee member should bring 3 ideas for next meeting.

Next meeting: Thursday, June 2, 2005 - 7:00PM - Larkin Room at the Library.
